INTRODUCTION TO SMELL · LESSON 5 OF 5

Why does the same smell feel different to different people?

SmellBook records feelings and contexts people commonly associate with smells, such as calm for rain or comfort for fresh bread. These are cultural associations, not measurements, and not everyone shares them.

Whether a smell is pleasant, neutral or unwelcome depends on the person, the setting and experience. SmellBook's evidence labels keep cultural description separate from scientific findings.

PRACTICE
  1. Pick a smell you like and one you dislike. Write down where you first remember them.
  2. Compare with the feelings recorded in the Atlas entry: are yours the same?

Smell only things you know are safe. Never smell unknown substances, chemicals, gas, smoke from fires or anything that could be harmful, and waft gently instead of inhaling hard. If you have a smell-related health concern, ask a medical professional.
