SMELLS IN HISTORY

Smells in SmellBook’s historical sources: 16 checked passages.

Each line below is one checked passage in a historical source: a book, magazine or novel, read on its digitised page. It is listed at the time the passage states or, when it states none, at its publication date, the latest time it can describe; each line says which. Times keep the precision of the source: a century, a year, a month or a day.

17th century

18th century

By place

Only places that a checked passage names. A passage describes one scene at one time, never the whole place.

About these records

A period is the time a checked historical passage describes, kept at the precision the evidence gives: a century (only when the passage states one), a year, a month or a day; when a passage states no time, its publication date is used as the latest time it can describe. A smell is linked to it only through a VERIFIED claim on a historical source. Each link records what one source wrote then; it does not describe a whole city or era, it says nothing about the smell today, and it is not evidence that a smell has changed or disappeared. Decades and centuries only group these records for browsing.
