What may cause the off-odour of lower-grade sofa leather ↗

In sofa leathers of different grades, substantial emissions of aliphatic aldehydes and ketones, particularly hexanal, appear to cause the off-flavour of medium- and low-grade leathers.

Upholstery leather for sofas; it explains an off-odour, not the smell of leather in general.
