A seasonal odour in railway cars linked to wall insulation foam ↗

In a case study of Australian passenger trains, volatile chemical compounds released by water from insulation foam in the car walls were identified as the likely cause of a seasonal, objectionable odour reported by travellers and drivers in the railway cars; the authors considered it unlikely that bacterial colonies in the air-handling (HVAC) systems were the odour source.

One case study of odour-affected trains in Australia, in which insulation foam taken from the car walls was exposed to simulated temperature and humidity combinations in a climate simulator to recreate the odour. It concerns one unwanted odour, not the everyday smell of train carriages; the cause is stated as likely, not proven, and the abstract does not name the compounds.
