CITATION CHECK

Title, creator, publisher and date checked against the catalogue record on 2026-10-05 by an automated check. The Wikisource Index record (Once a Week, 1st Series, Volume VII, Bradbury & Evans, 1862) and the Internet Archive item agree on the periodical and volume; the article page names James Hain Friswell and spans images 369–371, and the page header dates the issue 20 September 1862. Date confirmed to the day. SmellBook publishes only the citation, the location of the passage and its own claim, never the work’s text.

CLM-UNDERGROUND-001

No smell of damp on the first Underground ↗

Describing the first journey along the whole of London's not yet finished Metropolitan Railway, made by invited guests in August 1862, James Hain Friswell wrote that Gower Street station had no smell of damp or confined air and that the air stayed dry and pleasant on that hot day.

One writer's impression of a new line on a single summer journey before it opened; it does not describe the line in regular service.
