Earthy or mineral?
Pupils learn to tell two easily confused smell words apart using Atlas examples.
- Smell only things you know are safe. Never smell unknown substances, chemicals, gas, smoke from fires or anything that could be harmful, and waft gently instead of inhaling hard. If you have a smell-related health concern, ask a medical professional.
- Check for allergies and sensitivities before any smelling activity, and let any pupil sit out.
- Use closed cups and waft; never ask pupils to sniff strongly or to smell cleaning products, fuels, chemicals or anything unknown.
- The Smell Vocabulary lesson on screen
- Optional: a small pot of garden soil and a wet stone, in closed cups
- Read the two definitions from the lesson.
- Sort the lesson's Atlas examples into earthy, mineral or both.
- If using samples, waft each gently and vote which word fits better.
- Repeat with a second pair of words from the course.
