Stable and barnyard in an 1880 Hanoverian village

In an 1880 Popular Science Monthly article on life in a Hanoverian village, Walter Nordhoff writes that the best room of his lodgings looked onto the stable and barnyard and took in their smell, and that a manure heap lay on the way in from the street.

SCOPE

One visitor's description of a single house in one village, published in 1880; it records what he noticed then, not how stables smell today.
