Who decides what SmellBook publishes, and how.
This governance is a draft published for adoption. Roles are defined but role holders are not yet published; until a nonprofit governing body exists, the project owner holds reserved decisions.
- Editor. Drafts and revises entries, claims, translations and relationships.
- Reviewer. Checks another editor's draft against the entry standard, writing guide and evidence rules before publication.
- Evidence reviewer. Checks citations and classifies source rights before a source is registered.
- Language reviewer. A native speaker who confirms localized names before they are marked verified.
- Maintainer. Runs the validation gate and publishes releases; cannot bypass a failing check.
- Project owner. Holds decisions reserved to the organisation until a nonprofit governing body exists.
- The reviewer of a draft is never its author.
- No one may mark their own source as citation-checked or rights-classified.
- A failing validation check is fixed at its cause; it is never removed, skipped or weakened to publish.
- Community contributions, when they exist, follow the documented review model and never become VERIFIED automatically.
- Decisions that change what SmellBook publishes as fact are recorded: in the changelog, a correction notice or a QA record.
- Grant or change the licence for SmellBook-created datasets: Project owner
- Retire or merge a permanent identifier: Project owner
- Mark a localized name as verified: Language reviewer
- Publish a correction notice: Reviewer
- Change the entry standard, writing guide or evidence classes: Project owner
- Move any capability from not live to live: Project owner
- Anyone making an editorial decision declares any commercial relationship with a brand, product, place or institution the decision concerns, and does not decide on it.
- Entries, rankings and relationships are never changed in exchange for payment or other benefit.
- Funding, partnerships and education revenue never buy editorial outcomes; SmellBook's economic principle keeps the knowledge commons public.
